Chicago: The main setting in this RP is the city of Chicago, IL. Chicagoland has a population of about 9.5 million people, not to mention all the nasty creatures of the night who don't get covered on the census. There's a lot of crime, a lot of danger, and that's just from the regular humans. The mob bosses never really got run out of town, and there's a few Crime lords still waging war for territory. |

The Nevernever |
"McAnnally's is a tavern. Not a bar, not a pub, but an actualOld-World style tavern. Three stairs lead down to the main, hardwood floor. The bar has thirteen stools at it. There are thirteen columns of dark wood, each one hand-carved with swirling leaves and images of beings of tale and fantasy. Thirteen tables have been spaced out around the room in an irregular pattern, and like the columns and the barstools, they have been intentionally placed that way to deflect and scatter random magical energies. It cuts down on the accidents caused by grumpy wizards, and clueless kids just discovering their powers. Several ceiling fangs hang low, circulating the air in the room, and the place smells of wood smoke, old whiskey barrels, fresh bread and roasting meat." - Description from Death Masks, Book Five of the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher. Undertown |
Chicago was built on what is essentially a swamp, being close to the water level of Lake Michigan. Every year the city sank more and more into the muck of the foundations, so it took a lot of creative building to keep the city afloat. Roads were built with a latticework, and another road above the inital one, with the expectation that they would sink. Homes were designed the same way, with the front door built into the second floor, so that eventually it would be ground level as the house sank. There is now a whole city beneath the streets of Chicago, a place dubbed Undertown. There used to be rats and criminals lurking there, but they got ran out by evil faries and monsters. It's a maze of lightless, rotting, precarious tunnels- and not exactly recommended for tourists. The only access is through various basement doorways and cellars around the city, the doors triggered by hidden switches. |
